This is a collection of photos taken from a walk I took around the Mississippi Neighborhood in North Portland. I was happy to find lot’s of color, art and reclaimed materials on my walk. I hope you enjoy!
I like this colorful house! One thing I noticed when moving to Portland from Colorado is that people use way more color on their homes here. I approve! I usually push people to be a little bold in their design choices.
There are a lot murals in the Mississippi area!
Sunlan lighting is a longtime portland fixture! They always have interesting window displays. I’ve had to go here a few times to find odd replacement bulbs for remodel projects. The times I’ve been there the owner always say’s “Welcome to Sunlan how can we light up your life?”
These two houses are cute, artistic and seem to use a lot of reclaimed materials in their construction.
I like the artistic doors on this recycling enclosure!
A closer look at cottage #1
I like the way this orange looks with the wood siding.
This looks like reclaimed tin siding from cans. I have similar ideas for the siding on a tiny home I plan to build.
I just like the look of this building.
This is an interesting looking church.
All of a sudden there was a stone head peering at me.
Here’s a good use of reclaimed materials!
Albina Press is a nice place to hang out and they have pretty art on their building.
Portland has some good garage door murals!
This building has a cool look to it. The color choice and signage work well with the style of building.
Good Gallery often has… well as the name suggests… good shows. It’s such a cute little building too! You can find their show listings here: http://goodpdx.com/
I noticed the stone head that is similar to the one that I saw earlier on my walk. I talked to the owner of the gallery and it turns out that he makes them. (I think they’re concrete and not stone)
Here’s some more of the owner of Good Gallery’s sculpture work.
I’ve always liked this building! Now there’s a fun German themed bar here.
I like that there’s so much art to see on the structures on Mississippi Ave!
I think I just took a step back in time to my small town upbringing.
I feel like someone is looking at me.
Every time I see a building that looks at all like a Mario castle I have to take a picture! Hopefully I’ll have enough for Mario castle themed blog one day. #lifegoals
I don’t think I’m supposed to be up here but I like it. Pistils Nursery has lots of worthwhile stuff to check out inside too!
Art can even tell you to piss off nicely!
I’ve noticed a lot of reclaimed materials on this walk and it’s probably thanks to this place being in the neighborhood. The Rebuilding center is such a great resource for reclaimed materials in Portland! Most building projects I’ve been a part of have involved this place in one way or another. You can look at their website here: www.rebuildingcenter.org/
This reclaimed rail is also part of the Rebuilding center.
Yay Small living and bold color choices!
